Advice to Avoid Frozen Water Pipes

The best way to avoid freezing pipes is with some preventive maintenance before the onset of freezing weather.  Making sure all hoses are disconnected from outside faucets and winterizing your underground sprinkler/irrigation systems are tasks which become more difficult after the first freeze (and maybe too late).

Recently the City of Spokane’s Water Department provided a media release with some sound advice on how to avoid frozen water pipes.

First and foremost, advise all members where the main water shutoff value is located in case of an emergency.  Here at ServiceMaster Emergency Services by Covington we provide FREE tags to identify your water shut off values.  Give us a call at 509-922-2500 and we’ll get those right out to you.

Next ensure all pipes in unheated areas of your home/facility, especially near windows are insulated.

Make sure to heat all area’s of your home/facility that have plumbing fixtures.  If your pipes are located on an outside wall behind a cabinet, make sure to leave the cabinet doors open to allow heat to enter the room.

If in the past you have had freezing pipes, one solution is to leave a trickle of water running from the highest faucet in the property.

In the event you have a frozen pipe, NEVER thaw it with an open flame, this may start a fire.  Use items such as a hair dryer, heat lamp or an electric heater to thaw the pipe.

For additional advice you can contact the City of Spokane Water Department at 509-675-7800 or check out the complete media release at Tips to Avoid Frozen Pipes.
