Spring Season Tips

The sites and sounds of Spring are upon us, birds chirping, lawnmowers, trees blooming, etc.  Along with these long awaited signs of Spring comes  potential water issues resulting from old man Winter.

Flooded basements and crawl spaces are typically caused by surface water ponding near the foundation, soaking into the fill dirt, or leaking in through the joint between the floor slab and the foundation wall.

Improper grading of the landscape around foundations is also a serious issue.   Make sure the ground near the foundation slopes at least six inches in the first ten feet.

Window wells fill up and water may leak in and around windows or soak the ground and seep in at the floor level.

Clogged gutters and downspouts also create problems, allowing water to flow back against the foundation.   Make sure they are clear of debris and properly discharging.

Outside water faucets are a prime source of problems, even so called “freezeless” faucets will burst their supply pipe if the hose was left on during the first hard freeze.  Turn the faucet on, with the hose nozzle closed, and listen for any sound of water running in the wall. If you hear it, turn the faucet off and determine where the potential leak/break has occurred.

Water is the Number One enemy of a home. It is always seeking a way inside, and efficient water management is the key to keeping it outside where it belongs.

Here are a few suggestion to assist in making your spring free of water problems

Re-grade your  yard to minimize ponding, erosion and flooding

Bury gutter downspouts to minimize surface water drainage near the house

Seal concrete, stone and wood to slow deterioration and damage to these materials

Install proper roof, window and door flashing

In the event of a spring water loss here at ServiceMaster Emergency Services by Covington we have the resources, knowledge and expertise to assist.  Please don’t hesitate to call
